UCL: Dortmund v Real Madrid [Review]

In tonight's Champions League headline fixture we saw Real Madrid head to Dortmund's infamous Signal Iduna Park for what turned out to be a thoroughly entertaining game.

In the first half there were goals from both teams beginning with a somewhat awkward back-heel flick from Bale to Ronaldo which he cooly put into the back of the net. Dortmund were able to equalise after a corner which was insufficiently cleared by RM keeper Navas. The ball ended up hitting Varane and then headed towards goal allowing Dortmund's Aubameyang to tap it in.

In the 2nd half Real looked to be in control for the most part but Dortmund always looked like a threat. Madrid were able to score after a brilliant Ronaldo cross which allowed Benzema to take a shot that hit the post and then rebounded into the feet on Varane who was able to get his first goal in a European competition.

At this point Real should have been able to see out the match but an impactful performance from Dortmund's young American star Pulisic changed the game. He looked full of energy and after dribbling up the pitch he was able to put in a precise cross which resulted in the ball landing into the feet of André Schürrle. Schürrle blasted the ball into the top left of the net and once again proved that he is a player you can depend upon in the big games.

Ultimately what I think this game came down to was the difference in substitution choices. Benzema looked a little off the pace this evening and Morata probably should have come on quite a bit earlier. Dortmund however brought on Pulisic and Schürrle who were together responsible for grabbing the match equaliser. ZZ and co. will be disappointed not to get the win but for the neutrals the 2-2 draw was a great game to spectate.
